2. Dr. Pat Pinsent, Female Ministry, Priesthood and Children's Literature

Dr. Pat Pinsent is Senior Research Fellow, Roehampton University. Curriculum Vitae and academic details here.

Course description

Inevitably, since women have not been admitted to the ordained ministry in any Christian church until relatively recently, and are still denied ordination in some bodies, especially the Roman Catholic Church, it is not possible to find literature, for children or for adults, which portrays women in this kind of role.

Nevertheless, if the role of the priest is seen as making Christ present in the world, mediating God to others and 'standing for' Christ, by actions such as nurturing, teaching scripture, tradition and the Christian life, then female characters in literature have undoubtedly had a priestly and ministerial role.

In this course, a wide range of literature, either written for children or often presented to them in school, will be examined, both to examine the portrayal of the role of the ordained male priests and to establish the ways in which female ministry in effect fulfils priestly functions.

A number of questions are inevitably raised during this analysis, in particular in relation to the way in which children's literature helps determine the perceptions of young readers.

3. Dr John Wijngaards, No Church Leadership for Women according to Sacred Scripture?

The author was dean of studies at St. John's College, Hyderabad, India. Lecturer at the Missionary Institute London (affiliated to Middlesex and Louvain Universities). Curriculum Vitae and academic details here.

Course description

In many major Christian Churches, such as the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church, women are still excluded from church leadership. This means that women:
* cannot be deacons, priests, bishops or popes
* cannot run a diocese, preside at the eucharist, forgive sins through confession or the anointing of the sick, impart authoritative teaching on faith or morals, etc.

The traditionalists claim that the exclusion of women from church leadership can be proved from the inspired scriptures. This course aims to show that they are wrong. Sacred Scripture does not ban women from church leadership.

The author was dean of studies at St. John's College, Hyderabad, India. Lecturer at the Missionary Institute London (affiliated to Middlesex and Louvain Universities). Curriculum Vitae and academic details here.

Course description

The course outlines the main stages of women’s involvement in Christian ministry. It sketches the background and details of the ordination of women deacons. It describes the various social and cultural prejudices that gradually caused the ban on women’s leadership functions, including as priests and bishops, to be enshrined in Church law. The course also provides a professional approach to the rules of assessing what is, and what is not, genuine Christian Tradition.
